Depending on what I am doing to my hair at any given time dictates the kind of DIY Hair Mask that I will use. Sometimes I need to repair the damage that color has done, add some moisture because it’s gotten super dry or just give it a little extra nourishment! I have five favorites that cover a full spectrum of hair issues so there is always something for everyone! 1 || MOISTURIZING DIY HAIR MASK || This hair mask is my go-to for when I need to add some moisture into my hair if it’s looking or feeling dry! You could do this 1-2 times a week to add in moisture! INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons of brown sugar & 1 tablespoon of olive oil (I use EVOO) DIRECTIONS: Mix into already wet hair (I like to apply in the shower before shaving my legs or taking a relaxing bath) and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well with warm water and style as usual. 2 || DAMAGE REPAIR DIY HAIR MASK || Color treat your hair, expose it daily to the harsh pollutants in the air or use a few too many heat tools? This mask is perfect for a quick pick me up for damaged hair! The longer this is left on it could work in reverse on color treated DARK hair & fade your color. So I wouldn’t recommend more then once a week. INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon of your favorite (any will do, really) shampoo & 1 tablespoon of baking soda. DIRECTIONS: Massage into already wet hair and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Shampoo and condition hair as usual. 3 || FRIZZ FREE DIY HAIR MASK || Does your get crazy and frizzy? This mask is definitely for you, it will cut the frizz in half when used once a week! Bonus Tip: To cut down on frizz, do not towel dry your hair it only makes the frizz more prominent once dry, instead let your locks fly free and air dry. INGREDIENTS: 1 banana, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise. I will not lie, this one smells disgusting but really gets the job done. DIRECTIONS: Mix well & apply generously to dry hair while concentrating on the roots. Leave it “set in” for 25-30 minutes (during this time, I usually wrap my hair in a plastic bag to mask the smell and catch up on my DVR) and rinse well. Shampoo & condition as normal. 4 || DEEP CONDITIONING DIY HAIR MASK || Instead of spending the big bucks on a deep conditioner you can get the same results from items already in your kitchen, ideal for the on the go gals! This mask will leave your hair with a crazy amount of shine and you’ll be able to feel how much softer your hair is. INGREDIENTS: 8 strawberries and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (the unrefined, virgin and organic kind– you can grab it in the baking section of any supermarket. I get mine for around $4 at Walmart) DIRECTIONS: Mix well (I do this in a big bowl with a hand mixer) to form a smooth cream and apply to already wet hair generously. Wrap it up in a plastic bag or shower cap and go over it with your blowdryer on low for about 5 minutes. Let it soak up for another 10 and rinse well with warm water. Style as usual. 5 || WORKS FOR EVERYONE DIY HAIR MASK || This mask will give you added shine, fight frizz, repair damage and add moisture. Even those of you lucky ducks with healthy hair can use this mask for some shine boost! I tend to throw this one together about once a month. The eggs will give your hair some protein, the honey will help repair your split ends, like we said above the coconut oil is going to condition nicely and give you some much needed moisture and the avocado will smooth out those luscious locks! INGREDIENTS: 1 avocado, 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. DIRECTIONS: Blend well. I use a wooden spoon to blend it. Apply to your hair beginning at your ends and then on up to the roots. Let this set for about 20 minutes and rinse well. Shampoo & condition as usual.
